Basic swimming, water safety, and rescue program Swim Safe Kenya has graduated a new cohort of highly trained lifeguards expected to serve in Kenya Aquatic environments across the nation.
The graduation follows months of studies on a wide curriculum that included among others: swimming techniques, pool maintenance, rescue procedures, CPR, and first aid.
The rigorous certification process for the new cohort comes as the latest initiative by the organization to promote water safety.
Swim Safe last year graduated over 35 proficient lifeguards, which involved teachers, coaches, and community leaders.
This year, the lifeguards were reminded of their roles in preventing drowning accidents and promoting safe swimming practices.
“The ceremony was a reminder of the growing demand for qualified personnel to serve in pools, beaches, and recreational facilities nationwide,” a statement from Kenya Aquatics read.
“The newly certified lifeguards are now equipped to act decisively in life-threatening situations.”
Elsewhere in the aquatic scene, over 600 swimmers are expected to take part in this weekend’s Kiambu Aquatics Sprints and Relays Championship taking place at Regis Academy, Runda.
Teams from Kajiado, Nairobi, Murang’a, Nanyuki, Nyeri and Meru have already confirmed their participation in the gala, which will be an official qualifier for two upcoming events: the Junior Nationals in Kisumu, and the Age Group Nationals in Kasarani.
Among the age-group events lined up in the two-day include: 25m backstroke, 100m medley relay, 50m breaststroke, 25m freestyle, mixed 100m freestyle relay and the 50m butterfly.
In Kenya Aquatics’ plan to incorporate as many events as possible, a water polo program will also take place over the weekend at USIU.
Last year, over 40 coaches were part of a groundbreaking beach water polo coaching clinic at Nyali Beach, aimed at boosting the sport in Kenya and the region.
